9am – 12pm Workshop A: Establishing A Robust Masterplan For Future Redevelopments

Successful masterplanning is the key to creating effective health infrastructure from start to finish. It allows for the facility to provide excellent health care to patients and have staff operating efficiently in the workplace. You will learn how masterplans fit into the development process, various stages of preparation, the strategic framework, urban design analysis, the outline business case and getting the brief right. Consulting and communicating with stakeholders is vitally important as well as how masterplans relate to design quality and architecture.

The Workshop will Address the Following Components:

About your Expert Tutor:

Robert has a unique blend of international and national health services and facilities planning experience influenced by his broad and varied professional background. He has health sector qualifications and experience in clinical, education, human resources and organisational development fields plus high level experience in health administration, consultancy and project management. Robert is passionate about health facility planning aimed at improving masterplanning as well as the functional, operation and environmental aspects of health buildings to the benefit of owners / clients, patients, staff and community.

1pm – 4pm Workshop B: How To Future Proof Your Health Facility To Ensure Sustainability

This interactive workshop will give you an international perspective on how major projects in Europe future proofing their health facilities. The St Olav’s Hospital is due to for final completion mid 2010. This 200,000 square metre state of the art hospital should be the envy of every health infrastructure professional. The St Olav’s Hospital redevelopment should be the envy of all who have a vested interest in health infrastructure. You will learn about the master plan including ward designs, logistics systems, ICT platforms and how these ideas can be used in Australia. Listen to not only what was done, but learn why - and join the discussion to see how your hospital can benefit from a global exchange of experiences.

The Workshop will Address the Following Components:

  • Forecasting future patient needs and implications on the facility
  • Creating health facilities that are responsive to patient needs and that help them to heal
  • Planning for future technological innovations and forecasting how these will impact on the delivery of care

About your Expert Tutor:

Ragnhild Aslaksen is the Chief Architect at the new St. Olavs Hospital project. She graduated as a diploma Architect in 1987. For 10 years, she taught and worked as an architect, while also being a juror in several architecture competitions. Since 1997 she has worked for the new St. Olavs Hospital project. For the last year, she has also been a member of a Danish government commission with responsibility for evalulating the hospital plans of Danish regions.

9am – 12pm Workshop C: Designing An Innovative Health Facility

When it comes to designing a health facility, being innovative is fundamentally one of the most important things to get right, to improve the model of care. The project needs to take into consideration not only the patients but a significant focus on the needs of the physicians and the staff who would be providing care. This workshop will identify the connection between strategy, brand, and design which is too often overlooked during a redevelopment project. Many ideas will be shared including using design as a way to engage and empower non-designers in the innovation process.

The Workshop will Address the Following Components:

  • Prioritising the most significant drivers affecting how health care services and facilities are delivered and designed, and review how they are most likely to influence design
  • Planning today for tomorrow’s health infrastructure and apply these guidelines to a variety of health care projects
  • Identifying how you can improve your model of care through design

About your Expert Tutor:

Warren Kerr is the National Director of the Hames Sharley Health Group, with specific responsibilities for all the healthcare projects undertaken throughout Australia and New Zealand. In additional to his formal qualifications in architecture, Warren has a Masters Degree in health administration and a post-graduate diploma in project facilitation.His current workload includes the $116 million redevelopment of Rockingham Kwinana District Hospital, the development of the business case for the proposed new 330 bed Midland Hospital, the development of a Master Plan for Osborne Park Hospital and Hames Sharley’s participation in the architectural consortium responsible for the planning and design of the new $1.7 billion Fiona Stanley Tertiary Hospital. Warren is a former State and National President of the Australian Institute of Architects and a former National Chair of the Australian Council of Built Environment Design Professions. In January 2009 Warren was appointed as a member of the Order of Australia for his services to architecture and his contribution to the planning and design of major health facilities.

1pm – 4pm Workshop D: Establishing Best Practice Methodologies For Procurement

Implementing a strategic procurement process is vital to any redevelopment project to ensure you have a sustainable health facility. This interactive workshop will cover how to select the right project team, getting the best possible deals, improve your current relationships and ensure your procurement is financially sustainable. Your current processes will be assessed as you will be led through a number of exercises to ensure you take home new procurement strategies, innovative ways of communicating with project teams and improve your own negotiating capabilities.

  • Highlighting how these are developed, negotiated and implemented.
  • Writing specifications for equipment and various assets
  • Outlining challenges, benefits and considerations when procuring
  • Understanding total capital expenditure and how it may vary during the course of the project

About your Expert Tutor:

Rob is a registered architect and registered project manager, joining the Department of Public Works in 1981. His involvement in procurement related activities have included principal architect responsibilities for procurement of external project managers and architects primarily for the 10 year Queensland Health Capital Works Rebuilding Program which commenced in 1992. From 2005 – 2008, Rob program managed, Project Services HLO Portfolio responsible for procurement of project teams for Queensland Health’s ongoing capital works program across the State. Currently Rob is the Assistant Director (Health Projects) Project Services HLO Portfolio, still responsible for procurement of project teams for Queensland Health’s capital works program across the State but now with more involvement in the “front and back end” of projects.
